About Us
When you walk through the door, you can expect to be treated with warmth, compassion, and respect.
All services are provided by trained, professional advocates with you in mind. Each session is unique to you and your needs and is survivor-led, empowerment-based, and trauma-informed.
Family Support Center's Advocacy Framework
-
Helping identify, define, and clarify needs and expectations.
-
Collaborating on personal safety planning and goal-setting.
-
Offering advocacy-based counseling, reflective listening, and tools for healing.
It can be hard to reach out.
Understanding Family Support Center's advocacy framework can help survivors anticipate what to expect (and not expect) if they decide to work with an advocate.
What does advocacy look like?
-
Meeting people at their own point of readiness
-
Supporting informed decision-making through education, resources, and referrals
-
Acting as a link to, and navigator of, systems (legal, medical, etc.)
Advocacy is trauma-informed.
-
We understand that trauma has an impact far beyond the immediate experience and that survivors may fear being retraumatized while seeking healing options. We do not judge or stigmatize coping and survival strategies. We help survivors grow the skills and approaches that can best serve their goals.
Advocacy is survivor-led.
-
We believe every person is the expert on their own circumstances and has their own concept of what safety, healing, and justice mean to them. All survivors deserve support. We advocate for their access to and and engagement with services when and how they choose.
We do NOT
-
Center ourselves or claim to speak for all survivors
-
Believe we must "save" or "rescue" survivors at the cost of their self-determination
-
Limit choices or tell survivors what they should do, think, or feel
